Ferro Aluminium is an alloy which is manufactured by mixing Molten Iron and Molten Aluminium in pre-determined ratios. The addition of aluminium to any alloy increses the new alloy’s sensitivity to heat. The addition of aluminium to steel is very helpful in densifying the resultant metal. Ferro Aluminium is the preferred de- oxidizing agent in the manufacture of steel. It offers significant advantages over the use of Aluminium Metal as an de-oxydation agent.

FERRO ALUMINIUM ADVANTAGES

Mettalic Aluminium is used as an additive to the production process of amorphous metals for the purpose of removing impurities such as iron oxide by reacting with it, but the product of the said reaction i.e. Alumina remains in the steel. The presence of alumina in aluminium-treated steel can be always detected by microscope and it is well recognized that the aluminium content in such steel is not in the form of mettalic aluminium but chemically combined with oxygen as alumina. The amount of alumina remaining entrapped in the steel is not always the same and consequently ingots are obtained which have varying physical qualities, such as ductility, although of the same physical composition.

Moreover, Mettalic Aluminium has the disadvantage of being very light in weight and, therefore, not being able to enter into the body of the molten steel, and also its reaction with oxides and with atmospheric oxygen at high temperatures takes place extremely rapidly, more or less intantaneously. Due to this rapid action, considerable amount of the aluminium added is ineffectually burned up.

FERRO ALUMINIUM USES

The largest use of Ferro Aluminium are in the ferrous alloys, and depending on the aluminium content range, use is best suited for deoxidisation, welding electrode manufacture and hard limited facing applications. Ferro Aluminium is also used in Ferro Aluminium Thermite that is used in turn to cut or to weld metal.
